Green Street Hooligans is a 2005 English film directed by Lexi Alexander and Bangalore Days is a 2014 Malayalam film directed by Anjali Menon. Both the film may not share much in common in the outside but they do have their own share of strange similarities.
Green Street Hooligans and Bangalore Days have a plot point that is very similar in idea. No, this is not the strange similarity that I'm trying to talk about. Green Street narrates a story about football hooliganism and Bangalore Days a story about three cousins. Yes, these are actually very different ideas and obviously not 'strange' similarity!
Both these films are directed by female filmmakers. In fact, both these films are the second feature length films directed by each. It's interesting to note that the themes these films deal with aren't exactly the kind that is expected of them. Green Street is a very violent film. It's a crime film on the backdrop of sports. And Bangalore days is meant to be a fun feel good film that has a major narrative driven by bike racing, more specifically speaking - motocross!
Lexi is a German who makes a film on football hooligans in Britain. Anjali Menon is a Malayali who used to be in Dubai, now living mostly in Mumbai, making a film that is set in Bangalore. Being an aspiring filmmaker myself, the thing that these women tried doing with their films is quite interesting. They seem to have tried pushing their own limits if you ask me. Maybe they dint, but the feeling that I had when I watched these films was that. Lexi's narrative was inspired from events that happened in her own life. But she shifted the narrative from her native, Germany, to England. Anjali, on the other hand, seems to have extended a narrative from her previous (a much more personal) film in a way. The kids in Manjadikuru might be just like these cousins when they grow up.
Lexi's film managed to be successful I believe, considering the fact that it gave way for two direct-to-video sequels. The success of Bangalore Days is something that I'm more certain about because it has just become one of the most commercially successful films ever produced in the language. So, I guess its I should find myself time to watch the later films made by Lexi Alexander and also wait and watch Anjali Menon is going to come up with next.
